Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
We understand that patients don't like to be told they need a root canal, but the truth is that there is no reason to worry. A root canal is a routine procedure that Dr. Williamson and his team of professionals perform all the time with great results. We use the most up-to-date technology for your comfort because we want you to feel good about getting the important treatment you need in a friendly, caring setting.
Root canal therapy is a dental treatment that is necessary to restore your dental health. The root of each tooth contains material that may become infected. When this happens, a dentist must remove the infected tissue and cleanse the tooth to prevent further damage.
Why Do I Need a Root Canal?
The most common reason a root canal is needed is because of an infection caused by decay or gum disease. Serious damage to the root or nerve of the tooth caused by an injury may also necessitate a root canal. The material inside your tooth keeps it healthy. When the infection or damage reaches this material, you will most likely get a toothache. If this infected material is not removed and treated with medicine, the infection can spread, resulting in continued discomfort.
How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?
Only Dr. Williamson can tell you for sure if you need a root canal. But if you have any of the following symptoms, it may be a sign that root canal treatment is needed:
- A raised bump or pimple on the gum
- Toothache pain that gets worse over time
- Sensitivity when you touch or press on the tooth
- Discomfort when you chew or bite down
What Happens During a Root Canal?
You can feel very comfortable about having your root canal treatment with Dr. Williamson. He has treated many patients who need root canal therapy, and he knows exactly how to make the procedure easy and just as comfortable as having a filling.
We start by numbing the area to be treated so that you don’t feel any discomfort. Then Dr. Williamson makes a small hole in the back of your tooth so that he can remove the infected material. Once all the infection has been cleared away, the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. If needed, medicine will be used to make sure that the infection is completely gone, then the tooth is sealed and filled. A dental crown may be placed over the tooth to protect and strengthen it.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
We will give you instructions on how to care for the tooth after treatment is finished. You may feel a bit of soreness in the tooth right after the numbness wears off, but this is usually very minor and nothing to be worried about.
