Crowns & Bridges

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations that protect damaged teeth or replace missing teeth and allow you to speak and chew normally. A dental crown fits over the entire tooth to restore its shape and size and provide support. Bridges are used to fill an empty space between teeth and are held in place using crowns or dental implants. We use porcelain to make our crowns and bridges because it is very strong and can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Dr. Williamson and our professional team want you to have a beautiful, healthy smile and make sure that you always receive the dental treatment you need in a caring and comfortable environment. We are happy to offer state-of-the-art technologies that make your treatment easy and stress-free.

When Are Dental Crowns and Bridges Used?

A dental crown is placed on a tooth damaged by decay or to protect a tooth after root canal treatment. Other reasons a dental crown may be needed are:

  • Severely decayed teeth
  • Broken or cracked teeth
  • Broken fillings
  • Large, unattractive fillings

A dental bridge is used to fill the space created by a missing tooth. The bridge is usually a single unit that spans three teeth and can be extended if you are missing additional teeth. It is attached to your natural teeth on either side and has a dental restoration in the center to fill the gap. A dental bridge improves the appearance of your smile and prevents surrounding teeth from moving into the space left by a missing tooth.

What Is the Process for Placing Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Placing a crown or bridge requires two appointments. During the first appointment, we carefully prepare the tooth using comfortable laser dentistry. Once the tooth has been prepared, our professional team takes digital impressions of your teeth. This is a recent technology, and we are very pleased to offer it to our patients. This digital imaging system completely eliminates the need for taking messy impressions. We use a simple scanning device to take pictures of your teeth, and then we use these images to create an impression that is much more accurate than those created using the traditional method.

The impressions are sent to a special dental lab, and we fit you with a temporary bridge or crown to wear while you wait for your new restoration. You return to our office about two weeks later when the permanent restoration is finished. We make necessary adjustments to make sure that the restoration is comfortable and you can bite down naturally. The restoration is then cemented permanently into place.

Before you leave our office, we give you specific instructions for caring for your crown or bridge. With proper oral hygiene and regular dental cleanings, your new restoration will last for many years.
